PerSONNA Case Study
Interview with: John Tomczak
President Pro-Tech Industries
Flint, MI
Application: Open plan office with design/drafting workstations.
"Each person sets his own lighting. No more complaints about too much light."

- John Tomczak, President, Pro-Tech Industries

When/why did you have a problem with your lighting?

We moved our operations to a new building with 5,000 sq. ft. of open space – all brightly lighted with fluorescents. The employees who work on drafting boards definitely needed the light. Others just a few feet away using computers didn’t like the bright light. It was impossible to find one light level that suited everyone. Those on drafting boards were straining their eyes to see, while those using computers were shielding their eyes from the overhead glare. The glare was literally a headache for some of our employees.

How did you solve the problem?

I knew it was possible to dim fluorescent lighting, but I realized that overall dimming wasn’t the answer because not everyone would be happy. So I was very glad to find out about Lutron’s PerSONNA personal wireless control for fluorescent lighting fixtures. It’s the perfect solution. We installed 40 of them. Now each employee can dim or brighten the fluorescent light above his work area with his remote control. Everyone can adjust light levels to suit his personal preference and the task at hand.

How do your employees like the PerSONNA system?

Pro-Tech employees think it’s great to have personal control of their own lighting. It’s simple, too. They just point the wireless remote at the fixture, zap the button up or down, and instantly change the light level. There are absolutely no complaints. With the ability to dim the lights, employees can virtually eliminate computer screen glare and washout ... not to mention the headaches, eyestrain and blurred vision they had experienced working under lights that were too bright. Everyone raves about it; the difference is very noticeable.

Are there additional benefits?

Certainly our employees are better off with improved lighting. And they like the personal control of their lighting environment. So there’s no doubt in my mind that PerSONNA has made them more satisfied and productive. There’s also been a noticeable impact on our electric bill. At the old building the meter just ran wild. With PerSONNA I’d say we have cut our lighting costs by 50%, saving us hundreds of dollars a month.

These leading organizations have PerSONNA controls.
