Background
Studio House is an iconic Olson Kundig property constructed in the 1990s. Originally designed as a combination home and photographer’s studio, Tom Kundig designed around an existing home structure, reorienting the plan by 13 degrees to take better advantage of views of the Puget Sound. In the spring of 2022, the new homeowners commissioned Terry Thomson of Audio Video Resource to implement a new solution that would diffuse natural light and improve the interior light to best illuminate their diverse art collection.
Design Goals
- Design a retrofit solution that maintains the architect’s original vision
- Incorporate shades and keypad controls that complement the industrial interior architecture of the home
- Properly illuminate an extensive and diverse art collection all while protecting it from excessive daylight
The Solution
To achieve the homeowners’ goals for their lifestyle and art collection, Terry Thomson and his team at AVR retrofitted the original barndoor theatrical projectors and decorative shell-like uplights with Ketra fixtures plus rebuilt the original fixture connections to accept modern Ketra S38 PAR lamps. He also tightened the Ketra beam spread angles on specific art pieces, ensuring custom illumination to best complement each work.
The original curtains didn’t offer the appropriate glare control for the windows facing the Puget Sound. Retrofitting with custom exposed bracket Lutron shades was the perfect solution to manage glare, balance daylight, and complement the industrial concrete and steel interior of the home.
Results
Ketra dynamic lighting offered a truly customizable solution for this homeowners’ diverse art collection. Every piece of art, from sculptures to paintings, is now illuminated with museum-quality light that best captures the artist’s intent. The result is an elevated custom lighting and shade experience that provides the best in modern technology while honoring the iconic home’s original design intent.
